Hero - grades

Filter Sciences stocks both grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steel filter housings in all single and multi-bag filter housing designs we offer. Grade 316 stainless steel offers some extra benefits that 304 stainless doesn’t, but it’s not necessary for every industry. Here’s a short guide of what to expect from grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steel.

The Difference Between 304 and 316

Grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steels have many similarities in terms of their mechanical properties. However, the most basic difference between them is that 316 stainless steel contains a higher percentage of nickel and a small amount of molybdenum. This combination gives 316 stainless steel superior chemical resistance compared to 304 stainless steel.

Pros of 316

Grade 316 stainless steel is a superior alloy compared to 304 stainless steel due to the addition of molybdenum. This enables it to be more corrosion-resistant, so it may be used in highly acidic and caustic environments.
Grade 316 stainless steel is also ideal for pharmaceutical and medical applications, as it can withstand the combination of strong disinfectants and high temperatures used in sterilization processes. In addition, it is resistant to pitting from chemical environments, which makes it more resistant to rust caused by exposure to saltwater, making it ideal for marine use.

Cost

One slight downside to 316 is its cost. Because it’s of a higher quality, it comes at a higher price point. If a filter casing is going to be used in an application where it’ll be interacting with powerful corrosives or chlorides, a 316 stainless steel filter casing will hold up longer and give a greater ROI than a 304.

Both 304 and 316 are considerably more durable than commonly-used carbon steel, which can corrode considerably faster than stainless steel — though Filter Sciences is proud to offer competitive pricing for the better material compared to carbon.
